Common Garburator Problems
A garburator that stops working turns your kitchen sink into a mess of standing water and food waste. Whether it’s jammed, making a humming noise, leaking under the sink, or completely dead, most garburator problems can be diagnosed and repaired in under an hour.
We repair and install all residential garburator brands and models – from standard ⅓ HP units in condos to heavy-duty 1 HP disposals in family homes. We also handle garburator replacement when repair isn’t cost-effective.
Garburator Humming But Not Grinding
A humming sound means the motor is getting power but the flywheel is stuck. This is the most common garburator problem — usually caused by food debris, a small bone, fruit pit, or utensil fragment jamming the grinding plate. Do not leave the unit running in this state, as it can burn out the motor. Turn it off, and call us. We clear the jam, test the motor, and verify the unit is grinding properly before we leave.
Garburator Won't Turn On at All
If pressing the switch produces no sound at all – no hum, no noise – try pressing the red reset button on the bottom of the unit first. If that doesn’t work, the problem is typically a tripped circuit breaker, a failed wall switch, a faulty internal switch, a blown motor winding, or a wiring fault. We test the full electrical path from the breaker panel to the disposal to isolate the failure.
Garburator Leaking Water
Water dripping from under your sink cabinet is often traced back to the garburator. Leaks can come from three areas: the sink flange connection at the top (worn putty or loose mounting ring), the dishwasher inlet connection on the side (a cracked or loose hose clamp), or the drain outlet at the bottom (a failed gasket or loose connection). We identify the exact leak source, replace the failed seal or component, and test under running water to confirm it’s resolved.
Garburator Draining Slowly or Not Draining
A garburator that grinds but doesn’t drain usually has a clog in the discharge pipe, the P-trap below the disposal, or further down the drain line. Common causes include grease buildup, fibrous food waste (celery, potato peels, onion skins) wrapped around the grind components, or accumulated food particles in the trap. We clear the blockage and clean the drain path to restore proper flow.
Garburator Making Loud Grinding or Rattling Noises
Unusual metallic grinding, rattling, or screeching sounds indicate a foreign object caught between the grinding plate and the shredder ring (a common culprit: small utensils, bottle caps, or broken glass), a loose mounting bracket causing the unit to vibrate against the sink, or worn internal grinding components. We remove foreign objects, tighten the mounting, and assess whether the grinding mechanism needs repair or if the unit should be replaced.
Garburator Producing Foul Odours
A persistent bad smell from your garburator is caused by food residue trapped in the grinding chamber, splash guard, or drain baffle. Over time, bacteria break down stuck food particles and produce odour. While running ice cubes and citrus peels through the disposal can help temporarily, a professional deep cleaning of the grinding chamber, splash guard, and drain connection eliminates the source. If odour persists after cleaning, the splash guard gasket may need replacement.

How Garburator Repair Works
Step 1: Book Your Appointment
Call (604) 265-3852 or book online. Let us know the symptoms — is it jammed, leaking, humming, making noise, or completely dead? If you know the brand and model, that helps us arrive prepared.
Step 2: Diagnostic & Quote
Your technician inspects the garburator, tests the motor and electrical connections, checks for jams, and examines all plumbing connections for leaks. You receive a clear diagnosis and upfront quote.
Step 3: Repair or Replace Your Garburator
Most garburator repairs take 20–45 minutes. If the unit is beyond repair (burned-out motor on an older unit), we can often install a replacement the same day. We use genuine OEM parts for repairs and carry popular replacement models on the van.
Step 4: Warranty & Follow-Up
We run the garburator with water flowing, test grinding performance, check all connections for leaks, and verify the drain is flowing freely. 6-month repair warranty on all repair work.
How Much Does Garburator Repair Cost in Vancouver?
Garburator repairs are typically among the quickest and most affordable appliance service calls — here’s what to expect.
-
Flat-Rate Garburator Repair $250.00 + Parts
Diagnostic & labour included. If the repair doesn't make sense financially, we'll recommend a replacement and apply the diagnostic fee toward a new installation.
-
All-Appliance Maintenance $150 Yearly
Maintenance for all 7 major household appliances. Yearly tuneups & inspection + year round $75 flat-rate repair coverage for any problems between visits.
-
Appliance Installation Varies
Get a custom quote for your new appliances, whether you just need one appliance installed or have a whole package you need dealt with - we've got your back.
Common garburator parts and their approximate costs: splash guards ($10–$20), mounting gaskets and flanges ($15–$40), discharge tube gaskets ($5–$15), reset switches ($10–$25), and stopper assemblies ($10–$20). For units that need complete replacement: a new standard garburator (⅓–½ HP) costs $80–$180, a mid-range unit (¾ HP) costs $150–$300, and a premium unit (1 HP, InSinkErator Evolution series) costs $300–$500. Installation labour is included in our flat-rate pricing.
Repair vs. replacement math: Garburators are relatively inexpensive appliances. If the motor has burned out on a unit over 5 years old, replacement with a new unit is almost always more cost-effective than motor repair. We’ll give you an honest recommendation based on the age and condition of your specific unit.

Recent Garburator Repair in Vancouver - A Case Study
The problem: A homeowner in Kitsilano called in reporting that their garburator wasn’t working even when they hit the reset button on it and wanted to inquire about a replacement.
What we found: Our technician Leon arrived on site and verified the customer’s complaint. Indeed the garburator wasn’t starting up, even when the reset button was pressed. Before un-mounting the garburator and checking inside, Leon verified that it received appropriate power from the plug it was connected to – and sure enough there was 120 VAC at the plug. However, at the garburator end, there was some floating readings, but nothing remotely near 120 VAC against neutral. Weird, huh?
The fix: Leon reconnected the garburator and verified that it received 120 VAC as intended. Apparently, when installing the in-sink garbage disposal (garburator), the plug that came with the unit couldn’t reach the wall socket, so the plumber (or handyman) who did the installaton fashioned their own using two marettes that weren’t appropriately sized. So when the homeowner went to move some stuff in their cabinet – they nudged this whole contraption and must have dislodged the live wire slightly. This is an incredibly dangerous situation as they could have gotten shocked!
We connected the plug and the garburator line with a crimp-on metal connector that was insulated with shrink tube. This was a much safer install, and restored proper power to the unit. After cleaning out some debris from inside, and leaving the customer some helpful tips about what to put inside, and what to avoid – Leon tested the unit, which now worked perfectly. Total cost: $250.
The takeaway: Garburator malfunctions are often misdiagnosed as a burnt out resettable fuse or a dead motor which requires a replacement of the whole unit. Careful, thorough diagnostic on the part of our technician helped save the customer a few hundred bucks in this case.
Should You Repair or Replace Your Garburator?
Average garburator lifespan: 8–12 years depending on usage and the quality of the unit.
Repair if: The issue is a jam (food or object stuck in the grinding mechanism), a leak from a gasket or connection point, or a simple electrical issue like a failed switch. These repairs are quick, affordable, and extend the unit’s life significantly.
Replace if: The motor has burned out (you’ll hear nothing at all, or smell a burning odour from the unit), the grinding mechanism is severely corroded or worn, or the unit is over 8 years old and has had multiple issues. New garburators are relatively inexpensive ($80–$500 depending on horsepower and brand) and installation takes about an hour.
Cost context: Most garburator repairs cost $250 or less. A new mid-range replacement unit installed runs $250–$450 total. Because the price gap between repair and replacement is smaller for garburators than for any other appliance, we’re always honest about which option makes better sense for your situation.

Garburator Repair FAQ
My garburator is humming but not grinding - what should I do?
Turn it off immediately – a jammed motor that keeps running can burn out. Try pressing the red reset button on the bottom of the unit. If it still hums without grinding, the flywheel is jammed and needs to be cleared by a technician. Don’t put your hand inside the disposal.
What should I never put in a garburator?
Avoid putting grease or cooking oil (it solidifies in pipes), fibrous vegetables (celery, artichokes, onion skins – the strings wrap around the grinding mechanism), coffee grounds (they accumulate as sludge), bones larger than chicken wing bones, pasta or rice (they expand with water and cause clogs), eggshells, and any non-food items. Running cold water while the garburator operates helps flush waste through properly.
Can you install a garburator where one doesn't currently exist?
Yes. We can install a new garburator in most kitchen sinks, including drilling the countertop or sink for an air switch if a wall switch isn’t available. Installation involves connecting to your existing drain plumbing and electrical supply. Call us for a quote based on your kitchen setup.
Is a garburator leak an emergency?
Not an immediate emergency, but it shouldn’t be ignored. Water leaking from a garburator damages the cabinet floor, subfloor, and can lead to mold growth. Turn off the disposal, place a container under the leak, and call us for a same-day or next-day appointment. Most garburator leaks are inexpensive to fix.
How long does a garburator last?
A standard garburator lasts 8–12 years with normal use. Higher-end models (¾ HP and above) with stainless steel grinding components tend to last longer than entry-level units with galvanized steel parts. Running cold water during operation and avoiding the items listed above are the two best ways to extend its lifespan.

Common Dishwasher Problems
A malfunctioning dishwasher isn’t just an inconvenience — it can cause water damage to your kitchen floor and cabinetry if it’s leaking, or leave you hand-washing every dish if it stops mid-cycle. Whether your dishwasher won’t drain, won’t start, or is leaving dishes dirty, our technicians have seen the issue before and can usually fix it in a single visit.
We service all dishwasher types — built-in, freestanding, drawer-style, and portable — across the Greater Vancouver area, including condos, townhomes, and single-family homes.
Dishwasher Won't Drain
Standing water in the bottom of your dishwasher after a cycle usually means a clogged drain filter, a failed drain pump, or a blocked drain hose. In some cases, a faulty check valve allows water to flow back into the tub. Our technicians inspect the full drain path — filter, pump, hose, and air gap — to identify and fix the root cause.
Dishwasher Not Cleaning Dishes Properly
If dishes come out still dirty, greasy, or with white residue, the problem is typically a clogged or broken spray arm, a malfunctioning wash pump, a faulty detergent dispenser, or water that isn’t reaching the right temperature. We test water inlet temperature, spray arm rotation, and pump pressure to pinpoint the issue.
Dishwasher Leaking Water
Water on your kitchen floor is the most urgent dishwasher problem because it can damage flooring, cabinets, and subflooring. Common causes include a worn door gasket, a cracked door hinge, a loose or damaged drain hose connection, or a faulty water inlet valve. We recommend calling us immediately if your dishwasher is leaking — don’t run another cycle until it’s diagnosed.
Dishwasher Won't Start or Has No Power
If nothing happens when you press the start button, the issue could be a faulty door latch (the dishwasher won’t run unless the door switch confirms it’s closed), a blown thermal fuse, a failed control board, or a wiring problem. We test each component systematically to avoid unnecessary part replacements.
Dishwasher Making Unusual Noises
Grinding, humming, or buzzing sounds during a cycle can indicate a failing wash motor, debris caught in the drain pump impeller, a worn bearing, or spray arms hitting dishes due to improper loading. A loud humming sound with no water flowing usually points to a stuck or seized pump motor.

Standard brands: Samsung, LG, Whirlpool, GE, Maytag, KitchenAid, Frigidaire, Amana, Kenmore Premium brands:Bosch, Miele, Electrolux, Fisher & Paykel, Thermador, Gaggenau, Beko, Blomberg, Asko.

Recent Dishwasher Repair in Vancouver - Case Study
The problem: A homeowner located in Kitsilano called us to help with their Blomberg DW81800SSIH built-in dishwasher that wasn’t draining water. There was lots of water pooled at the bottom of the tub, and they couldn’t get it to drain even after they bailed it out.
What we found: Our technician Sean took off the lower spray arm and the filter housing and removed some gunk and debris from there. They also removed the pump and found a small piece of glass lodged in the impeller blades. However, once they removed the piece of glass – the drain pump still didn’t drain the water properly. The technician removed the kick plate and the front door panel of the unit. They first tested the resistance of the motor windings finding that the drain pump motor was electrically sound. They also checked the voltage going from the mainboard to the pump to ensure it was receiving adequate power from the board and found the expected voltage going from the board to the pump. Seemingly, all the ingredients for the pump to work properly were in place. So what could be the issue?
The fix: The unit was installed in a way where the door latch closed and made a click as though it latched properly, however once water entered the unit, due to a slight forward tilt, the door came ajar ever so slightly enough to break contact with the door latch, which disrupted the neutral line from going to the drain pump, causing it to not run despite most other user-facing functions on the control interface seeming to work. We reinstalled the dishwasher, secured it correctly and adjusted the door to close properly and make good contact with the door latch and ran a test cycle to ensure it drains correctly, which it did. Total cost: $250.00, no parts needed.
The takeaway: Not every “my dishwasher doesn’t drain” call means you need a new drain pump. Often, there are a handful of other culprits that a thorough diagnostic will pinpoint – which can save the customer money, and parts.
Should You Repair or Replace Your Dishwasher?
The average dishwasher lasts 10–13 years. Here’s a general guideline:
Repair if: The dishwasher is under 8 years old and the repair cost is less than half the price of a new equivalent model. Most dishwasher repairs fall in the $250–$450 range (including parts), while a new mid-range dishwasher costs $700–$1,200 installed.
Consider replacing if: The dishwasher is over 10 years old, has a major component failure (wash motor, control board on an older model), or has had multiple repairs in the past year.
Our honest recommendation: Our technician will always give you a straight answer after diagnosing the issue. We don’t push repairs that don’t make sense financially — if replacement is the better option, we’ll tell you.

Dishwasher Repair FAQ
How long does a dishwasher repair take?
Most dishwasher repairs take between 30 and 60 minutes. If a part needs to be ordered, we schedule a return visit once it arrives — typically within 2–5 business days.
Can you repair a dishwasher in a condo?
Yes. We regularly service dishwashers in condos and apartment buildings across Vancouver, including downtown high-rises. We’re familiar with building access protocols and compact installation configurations.
My dishwasher is under warranty - can you help?
If your dishwasher was manufactured by Frigidaire, Electrolux, Blomberg, Beko, Bosch, Thermador, or another brand we’re authorized for, we can perform the warranty repair at no charge to you. Contact us with your model number and proof of purchase.
Is it worth fixing a 10-year-old dishwasher?
It depends on the specific repair. A $250 fix on a 10-year-old dishwasher that’s otherwise running well is usually worth it. A $500+ repair on a 12-year-old entry-level model probably isn’t. Our technician will give you an honest assessment.
What can I do before the technician arrives?
Turn off the dishwasher and check if the drain filter (usually at the bottom of the tub) is clogged with food debris. If the dishwasher is leaking, turn off the water supply valve under the sink. Don’t run another cycle until the issue is diagnosed.
