Common Dryer Problems
A dryer that’s not heating properly turns a one-hour laundry task into an all-day project. And a gas dryer with ignition or venting issues isn’t just inconvenient – it’s a legitimate safety concern. Whether your dryer won’t heat, won’t start, shuts off mid-cycle, or smells like something’s burning, we diagnose and fix it quickly.
Vancouver Appliance Service Pros service both gas and electric dryers, including standalone, stackable, and compact units common in Vancouver condos. All gas dryer work is performed by technicians certified by Technical Safety BC (GAS/ODP License: BC30591) – a legal requirement in British Columbia for any gas appliance repair.
Dryer Not Heating
The single most common dryer repair call we get across Metro Vancouver is a no heat issue. In electric dryers (especially Samsung dryers or Kenmore units made by Samsung), a a blown thermal fuse on the heater assembly or the blower housing is the usual culprit. Other options include a failed heating element because it’s exposed to constant heat cool cycles over many years the metal alloy degrades and can fail open. Though, sometimes lint buildup is also a factor and can start a small fire that can damage the heating circuit.
We’ve also seen hundreds of failed cycling thermostats, and things like burned wire connection at the element terminal prongs.
In gas dryers, we often see things like failed gas valve solenoid coils, cracked or worn out igniter (same heat degradation happens here as with an element), or for example a flame sensor that’s burned out.
Whether your dryer is a Samsung, LG, GE, Frigidaire / Electrolux, Maytag or any other make & model, our technicians carry many common heating parts in their truck stock for both gas and electric dryers on the van for same-day repairs.
Dryer Takes Multiple Cycles to Dry Clothes
If your dryer runs the full cycle but your clothes come out damp, the problem is almost always some form of restricted airflow.
Usual culprits here are a clogged or damaged lint trap (these are meant to be cleaned periodically under warm water without detergent), a blocked or congested exhaust duct (if it’s very far up the duct in your wall – you’ll need a vent cleaning company to clear this), a poorly installed dryer where the transition duct hose is kinked or crushed behind the dryer, or a broken thermistor pair on the inlet and outlet that are not giving proper informatio nto the control board.
In some cases, we’ve seen a heating element only working at partial power due to a power supply issue from the control board / centrifugal switch or for newer Blomberg models, the heater itself has a low side and a high side – so only one of the sides may be working while the other burned out.
When we get there, we check everything from the full airflow path to the heating system to find the root problem. And once we’ve diagnosed it – we’ll help you get it fixed quickly & affordably.
Important Safety Note: A blocked or clogged dryer vent is one of the leading causes of house fires in Canada. If you haven’t had the dryer vent cleaned in over 1 year, it’s very important to do this ASAP, because dry combustible lint and high heat do not mix well and can lead to serious appliance damage or worse yet, a house fire.
Dryer Won't Start
When you press start and nothing happens there are a few reasons to go over., One of the most common problems is either a faulty door switch (the dryer won’t run unless the door sensor confirms it’s fully closed), a blown thermal fuse on some Whirlpool, Maytag & Kenmore models, a failed start switch or push-to-start button on some Frigidaire & Maytag models, a broken drive belt (many dryer models have a belt switch that cuts power to the motor if the belt snaps), or a failed motor relay on the control board (this is especially common on Whirlpool & Samsung dryers when you hear the dryer clicking but it won’t start to rotate.
Dryer Making Loud Thumping, Squealing, or Grinding Noises
Any noise issue on a dryer is purely mechanical and it simply means that either something isn’t in the right place, or it’s worn out and starting to grind against something it shouldn’t.
Thumping or rumbling usually signals drum rollers that are starting to wear out or are developing a flat-spot.
A high-pitched squealing usually indicates a a bad dryer bearing in most Frigidaire models, and a belt tensioner pulley or drum rollers seizing on most Samsung, LG, and Whirlpool (Maytag, Amana, etc) models.
Grinding or scraping sounds point to worn drum glides (the felt or plastic pads the drum rests on) or a belt that is starting to fray and split so pieces of it are hitting or scraping against the drum and other components in the dryer.
These are all wear-and-tear components that get worn out over time with normal use – replacing them before they fail completely prevents more expensive damage to other parts of the dryer like the drum or motor. For most brands & models – the tensioner pulley, support rollers, belt, and bearing (if your dryer has one) should be replaced every 5-10 years as noises start to occur.
Dryer Overheating or Producing a Burning Smell
An overheating dryer or a burning smell during operation is a big safety problem that requires immediate attention. In most cases the cause is either: a failed cycling thermostat (the dryer doesn’t know when to stop heating), a clogged exhaust vent trapping heat inside the drum, lint accumulated around the heating element or gas burner starting to get burned up, or a heating element that’s shorted to ground (we’ve seen this a few times on Samsung models).
Over the years, and more recently we’ve also seen failing motors that are overheating under load. While this isn’t as common – this can happen with some Samsung & Electrolux models and we’ve fixed a few dozen bad motors over the last two years alone.
If you think your dryer is overheating, turn off the dryer and do not run it again until we (or another qualified technician) can get out there to inspect & repair your dryer.
Dryer Shuts Off Mid-Cycle
A dryer that starts but stops partway through the cycle is usually to do with a thermal fuse that’s intermittently tripping (typically from a partially restricted vent), an overheating motor that triggers its internal thermal overload protector, a failing moisture sensor that incorrectly reads clothes as dry while there is still moisture in the drum, or a bad dryer control board that is interpreting the readings from the sensors incorrectly.
On some older models with mechanical timers (usually Kenmore, Frigidare & Whirlpool dryers), a worn timer motor (bad contacts or loose or burnt wiring) can also interrupt cycles unpredictably.

How Dryer Repair Works
Step 1: Book Your Appointment
Call (604) 265-3852 or book online. Tell us the brand, whether it’s gas or electric, and what’s happening — no heat, loud noise, won’t start, or something else. We’ll schedule a same-day or next-day appointment.
Step 2: Diagnostic & Quote
Your technician runs the dryer through a diagnostic sequence, tests heating components with a multimeter, checks airflow from the lint trap to the exterior vent, and on gas dryers inspects the ignition and gas delivery system. You get a clear diagnosis and firm quote before any work begins.
Step 3: Repair Your Dryer
Most dryer repairs take 30–60 minutes. Common same-day repairs include thermal fuses, heating elements, gas valve coils, igniters, belts, drum rollers, and idler pulleys. Gas repairs include a safety inspection of all gas connections. We use genuine OEM parts only.
Step 4: Warranty & Follow-Up
We run the dryer through a full heat cycle, verify the exhaust is venting properly at the exterior cap, and on gas dryers confirm all connections are leak-free using a gas detector. 6-month repair warranty on all work.

Great servicePosted on Richard Styler2026-03-29Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Excellent service! The technician diagnosed the problem on the first visit and ordered two potential parts - digital boards - to replace because he was unable to definitively say which one was faulty. But once the parts arrived and he returned to fix our wine fridge he determined that only one of the digital boards was actually faulty. Once that was replaced he said he would return the second part for a refund. Our fridge now is as good as new and the overall cost of repairs and parts was far less than replacing the whole wine fridge. The service was really great - they arrived on time and were very efficient. I would definitely recommend them for any appliance repair.Posted on Matt C2026-03-28Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Recent Dryer Repair in Vancouver - A Case Study
The problem: A landlord in Downtown Vancouver called us about their LG electric dryer which seemed to shut off after just a few minutes despite initially starting on a 60-minute cycle and heating up, it would conk out 3-15 minutes after it was started.
What we found: Our technician Daniel arrived on site and found that the dryer was indeed heating properly and rotating the drum, and seemed to intermittently stop after a few minutes. Before any disassembly, Daniel put the unit into diagnostic mode and checked the error code register for any codes. The register flashed the code tE1 which usually indicates a thermistor fault. Daniel disassembled the top cover and front fascia and bulk head, removing the drum and belt to expose the inner components. Then he tested both the blower housing thermistor and the outlet (exhaust) thermistor, both read resistance within range. So what could be the issue?
The fix: Modern dryers use control boards and two (or in rare cases more) thermistors. However, the control board doesn’t read each thermistor individually Instead, control boards calculate the delta (difference) between the two thermistors to determine how good of an airflow there is, and how dry your clothes are. In our case, the rear thermistor was on the lower resistance range at room temperature, while the blower thermistor was dab-smack in the middle of the range. Over years of use and high temperature exposure, the alloys used in most thermistors can degrade, which causes it’s temperature coefficient (resistance range) to drift slightly. This creates what we call a “compressed delta” range – meaning the readouts from both are closer to each other than the temperatures at either point actually are. When the control board sees this, it decides that your clothes are dry far earlier than they actually are. After verifying that the dryer vent didn’t have any restrictions – Daniel replaced the outlet thermistor on the dryer. And voila! It worked perfectly and the homeowner ran 2 loads through the dryer that night without any further issues. Total cost: $250 + $45 thermistor.
The takeaway: Where most companies would have said – “oh your venting is blocked” or got lucky by replacing both thermistors (or in some cases a control board as well), our technician used a detailed diagnostic approach driven by many years of experience and deep intimate knowledge of dryer systems to pin-point the exact fault. Resulting in a sub $300 repair, versus a $500-600 repair plus vent cleaning.
Should You Repair or Replace Your Dryer?
Average dryer lifespan: 12–15 years for both gas and electric models.
Repair if: Under 10 years old with a standard component failure – something like a heating element, thermal fuse, belt, rollers, bearing, gas valve coils, or igniter. These are all wear-and-tear parts that aren’t a major failure or a fundamental problem with the dryer. And from our experience they will need to be replaced every 5-10 years on average. Most repairs cost $250–$350 total.
Consider replacing if: Over 12 years old with a motor failure (sometimes motor replacement can approach the cost of a new dryer – especially for Samsung & LG dryers), the drum is physically damaged (dented, cracked, or severely scratched which might cause sparks noises or even tear your clothes), or it’s a gas dryer with multiple failed safety components at the same time. Also consider replacing if the total of repair cost plus a professional vent cleaning in the next year exceeds half the price of a new unit.
Cost context: A new mid-range dryer costs $600–$1,200. Since most dryer repairs run $250–$350 with parts, the math heavily favours repair in almost every scenario. Dryers are one of the most repair-friendly appliances because the common failure parts are usually pretty affordable and straightforward to replace.

Dryer Repair FAQ
Do you repair both gas and electric dryers?
Yes. Our technicians hold Technical Safety BC certification for gas appliance work, which is legally required for any gas dryer repairs in British Columbia.
We repair both gas and electric dryers from all major brands like Samsung, LG, Whirlpool, Maytag, Bosch, Electrolux, and many others.
How often should I clean my dryer vent?
We recommend professional dryer vent cleaning every year depending on usage.
If you dry laundry daily or have a long vent run (over 15 feet), clean it annually or even twice a year.
The usual warning signs of a clogged vent are drying times increasing, the dryer exterior feels hot to the touch, clothes coming out damp after a full cycle, burning smells, or the laundry room is unusually humid when the dryer runs.
Clogged dryer vents are a leading cause of residential fires. So it’s very important that you stay up to date with vent cleaning – whether you’re in a condo, townhome or a detached house.
My dryer works but takes 2–3 cycles to dry - what's wrong?
In the vast majority of cases, this is an airflow restriction – a clogged lint filter, blocked exhaust vent, or crushed transition hose behind the dryer. Less commonly, a heating element producing reduced heat is the culprit. We check both the airflow path and the heating system to pinpoint the cause. Don’t ignore this symptom — it usually indicates a vent blockage that’s also a fire risk.
Is a dryer that's not heating dangerous?
A dryer that produces no heat at all isn’t inherently dangerous — it just won’t dry your clothes. However, if the dryer is overheating, producing a burning smell, or the exhaust vent is blocked, those are genuine safety concerns. Turn off the dryer immediately in those situations and call us.
Can you convert a gas dryer to electric or vice versa?
No – gas and electric dryers use fundamentally different heating systems and electrical connections, and cannot be converted. If you’re switching between gas and electric hookups (common when moving), you’ll need to purchase a dryer designed for the energy source available in your home. We can help with installation of the new unit.
