Common Stove & Cooktop Problems

Your stovetop gets used multiple times a day – and over the years there’s lots of wear and tear. When a gas burner won’t ignite or an electric element stops heating, you can’t cook and have to spend extra on takeout. And with gas appliances, ignition or valve issues aren’t just an inconvenient repair – they’re a major safety concern.

Every technician on our team is certified by Technical Safety BC (GAS/ODP License: BC30591) for gas appliance diagnostics and repair – a legal requirement in British Columbia for any work involving gas appliances, and their components like valves, igniters, and burner assemblies.

At Vancouver Appliance Service Pros we also service all electric and induction cooktops.

Gas Burners Won't Ignite

If you turn the knob and hear clicking but the burner won’t light up, it’s usually either a clogged burner port (grease or food debris blocking the gas flow), a wet or cracked igniter electrode, a bad spark module, or a possibly even a faulty gas valve that isn’t letting gas through.

On the other hand, if you don’t hear any clicking at all, the spark module or igniter electrode may have likely failed.

Our professional stove repair technicians thoroughly diagnose, clean, realign, and replace any faulty parts and test all burners before wrapping up.

Electric Stove Element Not Heating

If one (or multiple) elements on your electric stove or range aren’t working, it’s usually caused by a bad element assembly. Either the element itself is damaged (look for any burn marks, cracks or breaks), or the receptacle may have burned out. In some cases (especially on older Kenmore & Whirlpool models), the infinite switch may have failed or burned out. We replace these weekly across different models (from older Whirlpool ranges to brand new Frigidaire stoves).

On glass & ceramic top models, you might be dealing with a break in the filament of the element or a bad safety limiter gone awry. In some rare cases, a failed element can even crack the glass surface – which turns it into a very costly repair if not done in time.

Our technicians inspect all electrical & physical components for damage and get to the bottom of what’s broken, and why it broke in the first place.

Induction Cooktop Not Working

Unlike other electric ranges, Induction cooktops use electromagnetic fields with iron-containing cookware to heat up your food. There aren’t any elements or burners, only an induction module that either works as it should when it receives the appropriate power, or it doesn’t.

Common problems include error codes showing up on the display, some cooking zones not detecting compatible (ferrous) cookware, inconsistent or weak heating, no power (especially on Blomberg & KitchenAid induction stoves), or a cracked glass surface.

We diagnose and repair induction units from all major brands including Blomberg, Bosch, Miele, Samsung, KitchenAid and Frigidaire.

Gas Stove Clicking Constantly

If your gas stove just keeps clicking even when the burner is already lit (or worse yet when all burners are off) – there are a couple of potential culprits: moisture or food debris can become trapped around the igniter switch causing it to stick. In models that use a flame-sensor, the sensor itself may not be doing it’s job properly, or in some rarer cases the spark module is going haywire.

A thorough cleaning of the burner cap, igniter electrode, and spark switch usually resolves this kind of problem. But if clicking persists, the spark module, flame sensor or igniter switch may need to be replaced.

Uneven Flame or Yellow Flame on Gas Burner

A healthy gas burner produces a steady blue flame. While a small amount of yellow tips on the flame is fine. A yellow or orange flame usually means that the natural gas isn’t burning off properly and is emitting carbon monoxide, which can become extremely dangerous even if you have a range hood running when you’re cooking.

An uneven or discolored flame usually means that the burner orifices are partially clogged, the burner cap is misaligned, there may be food gunk and debris trapped in the path the gas takes from the valve to the burner cap.

In most cases, the fix is a quick clean, but in some cases we’ve seen regulators feeding incorrect gas pressure, warped shielding under the burner, clogged valves (spilt stew making it’s way inside) and a whole range of other issues.

If your stove has a yellow or orange flame or if the flame is uneven – call a gas certified appliance technician (like us) right away as it’s a major safety concern.

Gas Smell Near the Stove

If you smell gas near the stove when you’re not using it and all the burners are off – immediately turn off the gas supply valve (usually behind the range), ventilate the kitchen, and call FortisBC’s emergency line at 1-800-663-9911.

A gas smell (even a weak one) can indicate a leaking supply regulator, a loose fitting, or a cracked gas supply line, or a gas supply valve or regulator on the stove itself. In our experience when the unit is turned off and leaks gas it’s usually a supply line or regulator leak, which is something FortisBC handles themselves.

Never attempt to diagnose or repair a gas leak yourself -it’s not only illegal, but also highly dangerous. This absolutely requires a Technical Safety BC certified technician to handle.

Recent Stove Repair in Vancouver - A Case Study

The problem: A couple in East Vancouver called us about a KitchenAid gas range that was out of warranty and they had an issue where the rear two burners worked fine, but the front burners kept sparking but wouldn’t ignite, though they could light it with a lighter.

What we found: Once our technician Shehbaz got there, he checked the complaint and found that the burners would ignite but very sporadically (maybe 1/10 times). Digging deeper he found out this happened after the client spilled some stew they were cooking.

The fix: Shehbaz removed the burner caps, heads and burner bases and the client did a good job cleaning them off. The electrodes has some gunk stuck on them, so Shehbaz cleaned them thoroughly and tested again – to no avail, the burners still wouldn’t light properly and the spark was only happening intermittently.

After removing the electrodes and pulling them out a bit, both electrodes had corrosion on the connectors. After cleaning one connector off and replacing both connectors with new spade connectors (having verified that the wiring 1-2 cm down from the original ends wasn’t charred or damaged), we tested the stove again and it lit up perfectly 10/10 times. Total cost: $250.

The takeaway: Being careful with cooking on a gas range is a must. If any spills happen, stop cooking and wipe it down right away before the liquid & debris can make it inside the range and cause further damage. While most companies would have ordered new electrodes or worse yet a spark module, years of expertise and doing careful thorough diagnostics helped save our client a few hundred bucks and helped properly fix the stove in just one visit.

Should You Repair or Replace Your Stove or Cooktop?

Average lifespan: Gas ranges 15–20 years. Electric ranges 13–16 years. Induction cooktops 10–15 years.

Repair if: Under 10 years old with a standard component failure (igniter, element, switch, valve). Stoves and cooktops tend to have longer lifespans and simpler repair economics than most other appliances – most repairs cost $250–$400 total.

Consider replacing if: Over 15 years old with a control board failure, the glass cooktop surface is cracked (replacement glass often costs more than the repair justifies), or multiple burners have failed simultaneously indicating broader electrical issues.

Cost context: A new mid-range gas range costs $1,000–$2,500. Premium ranges (Thermador, Wolf) cost $3,000–$10,000+. Since most stove repairs run $250–$400, the math strongly favours repair in almost every scenario.

Stove & Cooktop Repair FAQ

Are your technicians certified for gas stove repair?

Yes. Every technician who works on gas appliances holds current Technical Safety BC certification, which is legally required in British Columbia for any gas appliance diagnostics, repair, or installation. We’re always happy to provide proof of certification on request.

My gas stove keeps clicking - is that dangerous?

Clicking that won’t stop is usually caused by moisture or debris around the igniter (or it’s connectors) and isn’t something that is immediately dangerous, but it should be addressed fairly quickly.

In rare cases, it could be a stuck spark module or a bad flame sensor that can cause continuous gas flow without ignition, which can become a safety concern.

If you smell gas along with the clicking, turn off the stove and give us a call right away.

Can you repair induction cooktops?

Absolutely. We service all induction cooktops from Bosch, Miele, Samsung, Frigidaire, KitchenAid, and many other major brands.

Common induction issues include various error codes, cooking zones not detecting your cookware, weak or inconsistent heating, and a plethora of other problems.

We can fix them all, and have the right manufacturer relationships to get genuine replacement parts quickly & affordably for our customers.

I smell gas when I first turn on a burner - is that normal?

A very brief hint of gas when you first fire up and light a burner is perfectly normal – there’s a short gap in time between gas flow and ignition.

But if the smell is strong, and sticks around after the burner lights, or worse yet if it’s emitting a gas smell when all the burners are off, turn off the gas supply and call us or the FortisBC’s emergency line at 1-800-663-9911 as soon as possible.

Do you repair commercial stoves and ranges?

Unfortunately, we don’t. We do not currently service commercial cooking equipment for restaurants, bakeries, and commercial kitchens across Metro Vancouver. Your best bet is to contact Key Foods for all commercial cooking equipment.

We do however repair professional series stoves & ranges by KitchenAid, Jenn-Air, Gaggenau, Viking, Wolf, and more. If you have one of their professional series ranges, we’d be happy to help you.
