Common Stove & Cooktop Problems
Your stovetop gets used multiple times a day – it takes a beating. When a gas burner won’t ignite or an electric element stops heating, cooking becomes impossible. And with gas appliances, ignition or valve issues aren’t just inconvenient – they’re a safety concern.
Every technician on our team is certified by Technical Safety BC (GAS/ODP License: BC30591) for gas appliance diagnostics and repair – a legal requirement in British Columbia for any work involving gas lines, valves, igniters, and burner assemblies. Vancouver Appliance Service Pros also service all electric and induction cooktops.
Gas Burners Won't Ignite
If you hear clicking but the burner won’t light, the most common causes are a clogged burner port (grease or food debris blocking the gas flow), a wet or misaligned igniter electrode, a failed spark module, or a faulty gas valve. If you don’t hear any clicking at all, the spark module or igniter itself has likely failed. We clean, realign, or replace the affected components and test all burners before leaving.
Electric Cooktop Element Not Heating
If one burner on your electric cooktop or range isn’t heating, the element itself may have burned out (look for visible breaks or blistering), the burner receptacle may be corroded, or the infinite switch that controls the heat level may have failed. On glass-top and ceramic cooktops, a failed element can sometimes crack the glass surface — we inspect for both electrical and physical damage.
Induction Cooktop Not Working
Induction cooktops use electromagnetic fields rather than direct heat, so the failure modes are different. Common problems include error codes on the display, zones not detecting compatible cookware, inconsistent heating, a failed power board, or a cracked glass surface. We diagnose and repair induction units from all major brands including Bosch, Miele, Samsung, and Frigidaire.
Gas Stove Clicking Constantly
If your gas stove keeps clicking even when the burner is lit (or when all burners are off), moisture or food debris is usually trapped around the igniter switch. A thorough cleaning of the burner cap, igniter electrode, and spark switch typically resolves it. If clicking persists after cleaning, the spark module or igniter switch may need replacement.
Uneven Flame or Yellow Flame on Gas Burner
A healthy gas burner produces a steady blue flame. A yellow, orange, or uneven flame usually means the burner ports are partially clogged, the air shutter needs adjustment, or the burner cap is misaligned after cleaning. Yellow flames can also indicate incomplete combustion — a condition that should be inspected promptly by a Technical Safety BC certified technician.
Gas Smell Near the Stove
If you smell gas near your stove when all burners are off, turn off the gas supply valve behind the range immediately, ventilate the area, and call FortisBC’s emergency line at 1-800-663-9911. A gas smell can indicate a leaking gas valve, a loose fitting, or a cracked gas supply line. Never attempt to diagnose or repair a gas leak yourself – this requires a Technical Safety BC certified technician.

Great servicePosted on Richard Styler2026-03-29Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Excellent service! The technician diagnosed the problem on the first visit and ordered two potential parts - digital boards - to replace because he was unable to definitively say which one was faulty. But once the parts arrived and he returned to fix our wine fridge he determined that only one of the digital boards was actually faulty. Once that was replaced he said he would return the second part for a refund. Our fridge now is as good as new and the overall cost of repairs and parts was far less than replacing the whole wine fridge. The service was really great - they arrived on time and were very efficient. I would definitely recommend them for any appliance repair.Posted on Matt C2026-03-28Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Recent Stove Repair in Vancouver — A Case Study
The problem: A couple in East Van called about their KitchenAid gas range that just went out of warranty where the rear burners worked well, but the front burners sparked but wouldn’t ignite.
What we found: Once our technician Shehbaz arrived, he noticed that the burners that didn’t ignite could still be lit with a lighter, but while there was a spark, no ignition happened. It turns out this started after the client spilled some stew they were cooking on the front burners.
The fix: We removed the burner caps and heads and cleaned the electrodes manually. However, this didn’t solve the issue. So after further disassembly, we found that the electrode connectors were corroded and damaged. While it’s possible to clean the connectors, we opted to replace the electrodes as they are a cheaper part and we can never guarantee how much corrosion there is and how effective cleaning it off would really be. Once the electrodes were replaced, readjusted how they sat to perfectly spark against the burner head and ignite the outflowing gas, creating a beautiful even flame from each burner. Total cost: $250 + 2x electrodes.
The takeaway: Being careful while cooking on a gas range, and a quick wipe down go a long way. If the runaway pot spills over – it can cause larger issues and extensive damage to your range. Our expert technicians can handle all sorts of issues with stoves and cooktops, whether gas or electric no matter how simple or complex. One thing you can always count on is that our technicians will dig as deep as they need to in order to pinpoint exactly what’s causing the issue, where many other companies would have just ordered a new spark module due to a multi-module failure, we will take our time to diagnose your unit thoroughly and accurately.
Should You Repair or Replace Your Stove or Cooktop?
Average lifespan: Gas ranges 15–20 years. Electric ranges 13–16 years. Induction cooktops 10–15 years.
Repair if: Under 10 years old with a standard component failure (igniter, element, switch, valve). Stoves and cooktops tend to have longer lifespans and simpler repair economics than most other appliances – most repairs cost $250–$400 total.
Consider replacing if: Over 15 years old with a control board failure, the glass cooktop surface is cracked (replacement glass often costs more than the repair justifies), or multiple burners have failed simultaneously indicating broader electrical issues.
Cost context: A new mid-range gas range costs $1,000–$2,500. Premium ranges (Thermador, Wolf) cost $3,000–$10,000+. Since most stove repairs run $250–$400, the math strongly favours repair in almost every scenario.

Stove & Cooktop Repair FAQ
Are your technicians certified for gas stove repair?
Yes. Every technician who works on gas appliances holds current Technical Safety BC certification, which is legally required in British Columbia for any gas appliance diagnostics, repair, or installation. We can provide proof of certification on request.
My gas stove keeps clicking - is that dangerous?
Persistent clicking is usually caused by moisture or debris around the igniter and isn’t immediately dangerous, but it should be addressed. In rare cases, a stuck spark module can cause continuous gas flow without ignition, which is a safety concern. If you smell gas along with the clicking, turn off the stove and call us right away.
Can you repair induction cooktops?
Yes. We service induction cooktops from Bosch, Miele, Samsung, Frigidaire, KitchenAid, and other major brands. Common induction issues include error codes, zones not detecting cookware, inconsistent heating, and cracked glass surfaces.
I smell gas when I first turn on a burner - is that normal?
A very brief smell of gas when you first ignite a burner is normal – there’s a short delay between gas flow and ignition. But if the smell is strong, persists after the burner lights, or is present when all burners are off, turn off the gas supply and call us or FortisBC’s emergency line at 1-800-663-9911 immediately.
Do you repair commercial stoves and ranges?
Unfortunately, we don’t. We do not currently service commercial cooking equipment for restaurants, bakeries, and commercial kitchens across Metro Vancouver. Your best bet is to contact Key Foods for all commercial cooking equipment.
