Common Oven Problems
An oven that won’t heat correctly or doesn’t get to the right temperature turns every meal into a guessing game. Whether your oven won’t reach the set temperature, heats your food unevenly, or the door gets stuck shut after a self-cleaning cycle, our technicians can diagnose and professionally fix the root cause – not just the symptom.
Here at Vancouver Appliance Service Pros we repair all oven types: freestanding range ovens, slide-in range ovens, and even single and double wall ovens. All gas oven work we do is performed by technicians that are certified by Technical Safety BC (GAS/ODP License: BC30591).
Oven Not Heating Up
The most common oven repair call we get is an oven that won’t het up to the temperature you’ve set.
In most electric ovens (KitchenAid, Whirlpool, Maytag, Bosch, Fulgor Milano, etc), a burned-out or damaged bake element is the usual cause. You might see visible damage like blistering on the element or even a break.
In gas ovens, it’s usually a weak or failed glow bar igniter that almost always causes a failure to heat up. In our experience you might hear a poof sound periodically, or the oven takes 1-2 minutes to light up, if it does at all. This happens because the igniter needs to reach a specific temperature before the gas valve opens. When it weakens due to age and constant heat exposure, it will glow but the resistance won’t reach the right range and the gas valve won’t open correctly.
Other less frequent causes could include a bad oven temperature sensor, a blown thermal fuse, or a failed control board. However, in some cases we can re-calibrate the board and adjust for minor temperature gaps (up to 35F).
Oven Temperature Is Inaccurate
If your food consistently burns at the correct setting or takes way longer to cook than it should, the oven temperature sensor (thermistor) could be miscalibrated or failed entirely. The resistance range on these sensors changes over the years due to constant heat exposure, so it’s normal to have to calibrate your oven temp on the control board every few years.
Our technicians measure actual oven cavity temperature with a thermocouple and compare it to the set temperature on a cycle. On some models, the control board’s calibration with the sensor can be adjusted up to 35F. But on others, the sensor may need to be replaced.
Rares causes can be a stuck or barely-mobile convection fan, or issues with the control board reading temp data incorrectly.
Oven Heating Unevenly
Hot spots, cold zones, where you’ve got food that browns on one side but is raw on the other can happen when the convection fan motor fails (in convection ovens), a heating element could be damaged but functional, or the oven door seal is not properly installed or ripped – letting heat escape from one side.
Our oven repair technicians thoroughly test element continuity, fan operation, and door seal integrity, as well as any other potential causes to identify the exact problem and fix it properly.
Oven Door Won't Open After Self-Clean
A door that’s stuck locked after the self-cleaning cycle is one of our most common oven calls (especially on Frigidaire, KitchenAid, Kenmore & Whirlpool models). In most cases, on wall ovens this happens because during the self-clean cycle the oven goes way beyond the regular operating temperature, and most wall oven cavities don’t have adequate ventilation, which causes a heat-sensitive fuse to trigger, preventing an overheat. Unfortunately, on some models this fuse is not resettable (some Fulgor Milano ovens & older Kenmore models).
However, for range ovens – the door lock motor or solenoid may have failed while it was locked, the latch mechanism could be jammed, or the control board isn’t communicating properly with the lock assembly.
In the vast majority of cases, we can usually release the door and repair the lock mechanism without having to replace parts. But if there is a bigger problem, we will figure it out and repair it professionally.
Oven Door Won't Close Properly Or Is Misaligned
An oven door that doesn’t close fully, doesn’t sit flush with the oven body, sags, or bounces back open when you close it is usually caused by worn or broken door hinges, overly stretched door springs, or in some rare cases a warped / bent door frame (from thermal stress over time or physical weight).
A door that isn’t sealing fully lets heat escape, wastes energy, and can cause uneven cooking.
Our expert technicians can replace hinges, springs, and door gaskets to restore a proper seal. As well as replace the oven door shell carrying over the original glass, fittings and other bits and pieces for an affordable effective repair.
Gas Oven Slow to Preheat
If your gas oven is taking 20–30+ minutes to preheat instead of the usual 10-15, the igniter is almost always the cause because it starts to degrade with age. When the igniter’s amperage drawn drops below the threshold required to open the gas valve, preheating will take way longer (if the oven will even reach the set temperature).
A bake igniter replacement is one of the most straightforward and affordable oven repairs. Igniters usually cost $50-150 depending on the brand / model. And for older ovens, we have a range of universal glow bar igniters from Whirlpool & Frigidaire that are compatible with 90% of modern gas ovens (except some LG & Samsung models).

Great servicePosted on Richard Styler2026-03-29Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Excellent service! The technician diagnosed the problem on the first visit and ordered two potential parts - digital boards - to replace because he was unable to definitively say which one was faulty. But once the parts arrived and he returned to fix our wine fridge he determined that only one of the digital boards was actually faulty. Once that was replaced he said he would return the second part for a refund. Our fridge now is as good as new and the overall cost of repairs and parts was far less than replacing the whole wine fridge. The service was really great - they arrived on time and were very efficient. I would definitely recommend them for any appliance repair.Posted on Matt C2026-03-28Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Recent Oven Repair in Vancouver - A Case Study
The problem: We had a homeowner in West Vancouver call about a Bosch oven that didn’t reach the temperature they set a few times. They’d set it to 375 F but according to the thermometer they put inside the oven it only went up to 300 F.
What we found: As with any temperature complaint, our technician Han Su hooked up a thermocouple probe and set the oven to preheat. They verified that the oven reached around 340 F (instead of the 300F shown on the consumer’s thermometer) and that the elements cycled around 340 F, as though it had reached the 375 F set temperature.
Han Su went on to pull the oven out and take off the back plate to expose the control board and other components. And verify the correct voltage from the wall, at the main board, the double line break relays, and at the elements, and that the convection fan functioned normally. Everything was in order and the unit received ~ 240 VAC and dispatched it properly to the elements, so it wasn’t a power supply problem, but a timing problem controlled by the relay board. In simpler terms, the control board was basically “throttling” the elements. After verifying that the homeowner had never calibrated their oven before – the problem was clear.
The fix: Our technician Han Su recalibrated the control board adjusting by 35F which was the gap between when the elements cycled and the set temperature. After setting it on pre-heat again, the oven reached the set temperature quickly, and the elements cycled correctly at the right temperature. Total cost: $250. Time on site: around 1 hour.
The takeaway: A bad oven temperature sensor is often the first suspect when the oven heats, but misses the set temperature or cooks unevenly. And where many companies would have just ordered a new sensor + control board without thinking too much – we helped our customer save a few hundred dollars with careful thorough diagnostics and many years of experience. Our technicians are trained by the manufacturers on their full range of appliance products, and have the experience and know-how to track down these kinds of issues, and more nuanced problems, where most other companies start shotgunning parts – we dig deep and repair exactly and only what’s necessary.
Should You Repair or Replace Your Oven?
Average lifespan: Gas ovens 15–20 years. Electric ovens 13–16 years. Wall ovens 14–18 years.
Repair if: Under 12 years old with a component failure like an igniter, element, sensor, or door hinge. Ovens are built to last and most repairs are well under half the replacement cost. Wall ovens especially favour repair — replacement involves cabinet modification and professional reinstallation.
Consider replacing if: Over 15 years old with a control board failure on a discontinued model (boards become scarce and expensive), or a gas oven with multiple safety component failures. Also consider replacing if the oven cavity interior is severely rusted or damaged.
Cost context: A new wall oven costs $1,500–$4,000+ installed. A freestanding range costs $1,000–$2,500. Since most oven repairs run $250–$400, repair is almost always the smarter financial move.

Oven Repair FAQ
My oven takes forever to preheat - what's wrong?
In gas ovens, a slow preheat is almost always an igniter that’s getting weaker – it will still glow but won’t draw enough current to open the gas valve correctly.
In an electric oven, it’s usually a bad bake element or a failing temperature sensor that would cause the same symptom.
Either way, it’s usually a straightforward and affordable repair.
Can you repair a wall oven without removing it from the cabinet?
Many wall oven repairs (sensors, elements, control boards) can be done without having to fully move the oven out of the cabinet by accessing the various parts from the front or through an access panel.
However, in most cases we will have to pull the oven out slightly (at least 5 inches) to access the screws that hold these panels in place.
If we’re replacing an element or fuse, or have t dig deeper in our diagnostics, we may need to pull it out altogether.
Our technicians have specialized oven dollies to be able to remove wall ovens (even double units) safely all by themselves. We will be very careful during the removal, and will install your oven back in place when the repair is done.
Is it safe to use my oven if the self-clean door lock is broken?
Yes. The door lock is only used during the self-clean cycle, not during regular operation. The self-clean cycle reaches extremely high temperatures and for this reason the oven locks itself (for your safety).
If the door lock won’t latch but the door still opens and closes properly, your oven will cook perfectly fine with a broken door lock. However, you won’t be able to run the self-clean function until it’s repaired.
Why does my oven burn food on one side?
Uneven baking is usually caused by a failed convection fan motor (the fan that circulates hot air), a partially burned or damaged element, or a door seal that’s damaged and letting heat escape from one side.
A quick diagnostic allows our technicians to pinpoint which component is responsible.
Do you repair commercial ovens?
No, we generally don’t. We do not service commercial ovens for restaurants, bakeries, and commercial kitchens across Metro Vancouver. Commercial. For commercial units, you’re best off calling Key Foods – though they may require a premium diagnostic fee depending on the brand and complexity of the equipment.
