Common Refrigerator & Freezer Problems
A fridge that stops cooling can cost you hundreds of dollars in spoiled food within a single day. Whether it’s running warm, making strange noises, leaking water onto your kitchen floor, or building up frost in the freezer, we treat every fridge repair as urgent — because it is.
We service all refrigerator types: top-freezer, bottom-freezer, side-by-side, French door, built-in, compact, and standalone freezers. Our technicians carry common fridge parts on the van — compressor start relays, evaporator fan motors, thermistors, defrost thermostats, and door gaskets — so most repairs are completed the same day.
Fridge Not Cooling Properly
If your fridge is running but food isn’t staying cold, the problem could be a failed evaporator fan motor (air isn’t circulating), a malfunctioning thermostat or thermistor (temperature isn’t being regulated), dirty condenser coils (the fridge can’t release heat efficiently), or a sealed system issue like low refrigerant. We test each component systematically to identify the root cause before recommending a repair.
Freezer Icing Up or Frost Buildup
Ice forming on the back wall of your freezer or around the door usually indicates a defrost system failure. The three components to check are the defrost heater, defrost thermostat, and defrost timer (or control board on newer models). A failed defrost cycle means ice accumulates on the evaporator coils, eventually blocking airflow and causing the fridge section to warm up too.
Refrigerator Leaking Water
Water pooling under or inside your fridge typically comes from one of three sources: a clogged defrost drain (the most common cause — ice or debris blocks the drain tube), a leaking water inlet valve (on models with water dispensers or ice makers), or a cracked drain pan. We inspect all three and clear or replace the faulty component.
Fridge Making Loud or Unusual Noises
A buzzing, clicking, humming, or rattling fridge can indicate a failing compressor, a worn evaporator or condenser fan motor, a faulty start relay, or vibration from an unbalanced unit. A clicking sound that repeats every few minutes often signals a compressor struggling to start – this should be addressed quickly to avoid complete compressor failure.
Ice Maker or Water Dispenser Not Working
If your ice maker has stopped producing ice or your water dispenser has weak or no flow, the issue is usually a frozen water line, a clogged water filter, a faulty water inlet valve, or a failed ice maker module. We test water pressure, check for frozen lines, and replace the failed component.
Fridge Running Constantly
A refrigerator that never stops running wastes energy and usually means it’s struggling to maintain temperature. Common causes include dirty condenser coils, a failing compressor, a faulty door gasket that’s letting warm air in, or a thermostat that’s not cycling the compressor off. Left unaddressed, this can lead to premature compressor failure — the most expensive fridge repair.

Recent Fridge Repair in Vancouver - A Case Study
The problem: A family in the Mount Pleasant area called about their Samsung French Door RF25C5551SR/AA model refrigerator. They previously had another company out and were told it’s a sealed system issue, but they wanted a second expert opinion.
What we found: Our technician Daniel checked the temperatures and both the fridge and freezer were running a little warm by a few degrees. The technician disassembled the freezer compartment and observed a partial frost pattern on the evaporator, which meant that the compressor is running and some kind of cooling is happening. This is where most other technicians assume it’s a sealed system issue and call it a day. Daniel proceeded to investigate the mechanical compartment of the refrigerator and tested the current draw of the compressor against the specs on its model sheet and found that the compressor was drawing less power than intended. Upon checking the mainboard’s diagnostic module there were no clear errors in the LED flash, nor any indication of trouble. Following the tech sheet, he tested the resistance of the compressor windings and found them to be electrically sound. However, the voltage passed between the combined board-inverter module and the compressor was off from what the technical documentation describes.
The fix: The refrigerator needed a new inverter board, which came as a combo with the mainboard. We replaced the inverter and had the homeowner observe the unit for 24 hours. At which point, they called us to let us know the fridge was back in action and cooling well. Total cost: $250.00, plus the cost of a replacement inverter from Samsung.
The takeaway: Where most other companies would walk away from this call once they verified that the compressor runs, but there is an insignificant frost-pattern (indicating poor cooling), we have the expertise to discern real sealed system issues from far less expensive failures – and repair them accordingly. All in all, the homeowner saved well over a thousand dollars compared to a sealed system, and their refrigerator will likely serve them well for many more years to come.
Should You Repair or Replace Your Refrigerator?
The average refrigerator lasts 12–17 years depending on the type and brand. Here’s how to decide:
Repair if: The fridge is under 10 years old, the repair cost is less than half the price of a comparable new model, and it’s not a sealed system failure (refrigerant leak or compressor) on an older unit.
Consider replacing if: The fridge is over 12 years old with a compressor or sealed system failure, has had 3+ repairs in the past 2 years, or uses a dated refrigerant (discontinued – parts are scarce and expensive).
Cost context: A new mid-range refrigerator costs $1,200–$2,500 depending on type and brand. Most fridge repairs (excluding compressor) fall in the $250–$450 range. So if you have a 7-year-old fridge needing a $350 repair, that’s a clear repair situation.

Refrigerator Repair FAQ
How quickly can you come for a fridge that's not cooling?
We treat fridge repairs as priority calls because of the food spoilage risk. We offer same or next-day appointments in most cases – call us at (604) 265-3852 and we’ll get a technician to you as fast as possible.
Should I unplug my fridge before the technician arrives?
Generally, no – leave it running so the technician can observe the symptoms. The exception: if the fridge is leaking water, turn off the water supply valve (usually behind or under the fridge) to prevent further water damage.
My fridge is making a clicking sound - is that serious?
A clicking sound that repeats every few minutes often means the compressor is trying to start but failing. This is typically caused by a faulty start relay – a relatively inexpensive repair ($20–$50 for the part). But if it continues, it can damage the compressor itself, so don’t wait too long to get it diagnosed.
Do you repair built-in and commercial refrigerators?
Yes. We service all refrigerator types including built-in units (Sub-Zero, Thermador, Gaggenau, Miele), under-counter fridges, wine coolers, and in some cases even commercial refrigeration for restaurants and businesses.
Can you repair a Samsung fridge ice maker?
Yes – Samsung ice maker failures are one of our most common repair calls. Issues typically involve a frozen water line, a failed ice maker module, or a faulty water inlet valve. We carry Samsung OEM parts for these repairs and have all technical documentation including the official correct repair bulletin for the multi-modal repair process on 2012-2020 French door Samsung models.
