Other Appliances We Fix

Common Dishwasher Problems

A malfunctioning dishwasher isn’t just an inconvenience – any leak no matter how minor can absolutely wreck your cabinets or kitchen floor and leave you washing dishes by hand it if decides to break altogether. Whether your dishwasher won’t drain, won’t start, or is leaving dishes dirty, our technicians have seen the issue before and can usually fix it in a single visit.

Here at Vancouver Appliance Service Pros we service all types of dishwashers – built-in units, freestanding, drawer-style, and even portable dishwashers in some cases – and we work across the entire Greater Vancouver & Lower Mainland area. Whether you’re in a condo, a townhome, or a single-family home, we can see you today or tomorrow to get your dishwasher fixed.

Dishwasher Won't Drain

Standing water in the bottom of your dishwasher after a cycle usually means one of a few things.

You’re dealing with either a clogged drain filter (common on some Blomberg models), a failed drain pump, or a blocked drain hose.

In some cases, a faulty check valve (Miele & Bosch are known for this) can prevent draining altogether or allow water to flow back into the tub.

More rarely, if the dishwasher wasn’t installed up to code – the drain hose doesn’t have a proper high loop and can actually prevent water from draining fully, especially as the drain pump weakens with age – this can become apparent a few years down the line.

Our technicians will diagnose your broken dishwasher thoroughly. They’ll inspect the entire drain path – from the filter in the tub, to the pump itself, the drain hose, check valves the drain stack under your sink – we diagnose very thoroughly to identify the root cause and repair the dishwasher problem quickly & affordably.

Dishwasher Not Cleaning Dishes Properly

If your dishes come out dirty or greasy, or with soap residue on them – the problem is usually simple.

It could be a clogged spray arm (or a crack in one – this is common on Blomberg models), a broken wash pump (happens often with Bosch & Blomberg dishwashers, a detergent dispenser that won’t open (frequent on Whirlpool & KitchenAid models), or as simple as your water temperature just being too cold. Ove the many years we’ve been repairing dishwashers, we’ve learned to test everything from the pump to the OWC sensor, water temperature, spray arms and mountings, and pressure at the wash pump to ensure we cover the whole spectrum of causes and pinpoint exactly what isn’t working right in your broken dishwasher so that we can repair it quickly and correctly form the get-go.

Dishwasher Leaking Water

If the dishwasher is leaking water all over your kitchen floor – this is the most urgent call with a dishwasher because it can damage flooring, cabinets, and subflooring.

The usual culprits include a worn door gasket (Samsung, KitchenAid & LG), a cracked door hinge (Blomberg & Bosch), a loose or damaged drain hose connection, or a faulty water inlet valve (frequent on Bosch models where the dishwasher will just fill up all by itself overnight).

We recommend calling us immediately if your dishwasher is leaking – don’t run another cycle until it’s diagnosed.

Our dispatchers will provide instructions on how to stop the water supply and drain the unit to prevent any further leaks before our technicians get there.

Dishwasher Won't Start or Has No Power

If nothing happens when you press the start button, the issue could be a faulty door latch (the dishwasher won’t run unless the door switch confirms it’s closed and the control board and other loads have a valid neutral line), a blown thermal fuse (frequent on Whirlpool-made models), a failed control board, or a wiring problem (common with self-installs or cases where the plumber didn’t wire up the unit securely – especially if it was reinstalled recently).

Less frequently, over the years we’ve also seen quite a few bad power supply issues from the wall (failed outlet, or a breaker on the fritz).

No matter the cause, our dishwasher repair technicians will test each component systematically to avoid unnecessary part replacements.

Dishwasher Making Unusual Noises

Grinding, humming, or buzzing sounds during a cycle can point to things like a failing wash or drain pump motor, food debris caught in the drain pump impeller (glass pieces, seeds, bones, etc) , a worn bearing on one of the pumps, or warped / damaged spray arms hitting dishes or the tub.

A loud humming sound with no water flowing usually points to a stuck or seized inlet valve especially on Bosch dishwashers. In some rare cases, the filter screen on the valve can become calcified, or the water supply line to the dishwasher can be clogged.

We’ll test all motion components and electrical circuits that make noises to identify exactly where the problem is coming from, and replace the exact parts causing the issue or repair them if they’re repairable to get your noisy dishwasher back to normal.

Recent Dishwasher Repair in Vancouver - Case Study

The problem: A homeowner located in Kitsilano called us to help with their Blomberg DW81800SSIH built-in dishwasher that wasn’t draining water. There was lots of water pooled at the bottom of the tub, and they couldn’t get it to drain even after they bailed it out.

What we found: Our technician Sean took off the lower spray arm and the filter housing and removed some gunk and debris from there. They also removed the pump and found a small piece of glass lodged in the impeller blades. However, once they removed the piece of glass – the drain pump still didn’t drain the water properly. The technician removed the kick plate and the front door panel of the unit. They first tested the resistance of the motor windings finding that the drain pump motor was electrically sound. They also checked the voltage going from the mainboard to the pump to ensure it was receiving adequate power from the board and found the expected voltage going from the board to the pump. Seemingly, all the ingredients for the pump to work properly were in place. So what could be the issue?

The fix: The unit was installed in a way where the door latch closed and made a click as though it latched properly, however once water entered the unit, due to a slight forward tilt, the door came ajar ever so slightly enough to break contact with the door latch, which disrupted the neutral line from going to the drain pump, causing it to not run despite most other user-facing functions on the control interface seeming to work. We reinstalled the dishwasher, secured it correctly and adjusted the door to close properly and make good contact with the door latch and ran a test cycle to ensure it drains correctly, which it did. Total cost: $250.00, no parts needed.

The takeaway: Not every “my dishwasher doesn’t drain” call means you need a new drain pump. Often, there are a handful of other culprits that a thorough diagnostic will pinpoint – which can save the customer money, and parts.

Should You Repair or Replace Your Dishwasher?

The average dishwasher lasts 10–13 years. Here’s a general guideline:

Repair if: The dishwasher is under 8 years old and the repair cost is less than half the price of a new equivalent model. Most dishwasher repairs fall in the $250–$450 range (including parts), while a new mid-range dishwasher costs $700–$1,200 installed.

Consider replacing if: The dishwasher is over 10 years old, has a major component failure (wash motor, control board on an older model), or has had multiple repairs in the past year.

Our honest recommendation: Our technician will always give you a straight answer after diagnosing the issue. We don’t push repairs that don’t make sense financially — if replacement is the better option, we’ll tell you.

Dishwasher Repair FAQ

How long does a dishwasher repair take?

Most dishwasher repairs take between 30 and 60 minutes. If a part needs to be ordered, we’ll place a request with the manufacturer and then schedule a second visit once it arrives to install the part. In most cases parts are available within 1–5 business days (depending on where they’re coming from). If we have the parts on hand (in our truck stock), we will replace them during the initial visit.

Can you repair a dishwasher in a condo?

Yes. We regularly service dishwashers in condos and apartment buildings across Vancouver, including downtown high-rises. We’re familiar with building access protocols and the correct installation codes for all under the counter dishwashers.

Since we do warranty service for many dishwasher brands, we know how to correctly handle built-in dishwashers with cabinet panels, and even premium class top-down dishwashers from Fisher & Paykel.

My dishwasher is under warranty - can you help?

If your dishwasher was manufactured by Frigidaire, Electrolux, Blomberg, Beko, Bosch, Thermador, or another brand we’re authorized for, we can perform the warranty repair at no charge to you.

Contact us with your model number and proof of purchase to set up a same or next-day service visit with one of our dishwasher repair technicians.

Is it worth fixing a 10-year-old dishwasher?

It really depends on the specific repair, and what sort of dishwasher you have. Cheaper Frigidaire plastic-tub dishwashers can run you $600 on sale at Costco, whereas a stainless-steel tub LG or Samsung dishwasher might cost upwards of $1,000.

A $250 fix on a 10-year-old dishwasher that’s otherwise running well is usually worth your time and money. While spending $500+ with parts to repair a 12-year-old entry-level model probably would be a good time to consider replacing it instead.

Before you commit to any repair bill – our technicians will give you an honest assessment, and we’ll provide a detailed estimate on the parts required to bring your unit back to normal. So you can make a sound decision that makes sense to you.

What can I do before the technician arrives?

In general, unless your dishwasher is leaking water, or has water sitting in the basin (AE codes on LG dishwashers, E15 on Bosch units, LE on Samsung, or E1/F2/F8 on Whirlpool made units) – you can safely leave the dishwasher as is until we get there.

If the unit has any kind of leak (into the basin or onto your flooring), please drain and then turn off the dishwasher and turn off the water supply valve under the sink. Don’t run another cycle until the issue is diagnosed.
