Common Oven Problems
An oven that won’t heat properly or maintains the wrong temperature turns every meal into a guessing game. Whether your oven won’t reach temperature, heats unevenly, or the door is stuck shut after a self-cleaning cycle, our technicians diagnose and fix the root cause – not just the symptom.
We service all oven types: freestanding range ovens, slide-in range ovens, single and double wall ovens, convection ovens, and commercial ovens. All gas oven work is performed by technicians certified by Technical Safety BC (GAS/ODP License: BC30591).
Oven Not Heating Up
The most common oven repair call. In electric ovens, a burned-out bake element is the usual cause — you may see visible damage like blistering or a break in the coil. In gas ovens, a weak or failed igniter is almost always responsible. The igniter must reach a specific temperature before the gas safety valve opens; when it weakens with age, it glows but can’t trigger the valve. Other causes include a faulty oven temperature sensor, a blown thermal fuse, or a failed control board.
Oven Temperature Inaccurate
If food consistently burns at the correct setting or takes much longer to cook than it should, the oven temperature sensor (thermistor) may be out of calibration or failed entirely. We measure actual oven cavity temperature with a calibrated thermometer and compare it to the set temperature. On some models, the control board’s calibration offset can be adjusted; on others, the sensor needs replacement. A difference of 25°F or more from the set temperature indicates a problem.
Oven Heating Unevenly
Hot spots, cold zones, or food that browns on one side happen when the convection fan motor has failed (in convection ovens), a heating element is partially burned out, or the oven door seal is damaged and letting heat escape from one side. We test element continuity, fan operation, and door seal integrity to identify the exact cause.
Oven Door Won't Open After Self-Clean
A door locked shut after the self-cleaning cycle is one of our most common oven calls. The door lock motor or solenoid may have failed in the locked position, the latch mechanism is jammed, or the control board lost communication with the lock assembly. We can usually release the door and repair the lock mechanism without damaging the door or surrounding cabinetry.
Oven Door Won't Close Properly
An oven door that won’t close flush, sags, or bounces back open is typically caused by worn or broken door hinges, stretched door springs, or a warped door frame from thermal stress over time. A poorly sealed door lets heat escape, wastes energy, and causes uneven cooking. We replace hinges, springs, and door gaskets to restore a proper seal.
Gas Oven Slow to Preheat
If your gas oven takes 20–30+ minutes to preheat when it should take 10–15, the igniter is almost certainly weakening. A gas oven igniter degrades gradually — it still glows, but draws fewer amps over time. When the amperage drops below the threshold needed to open the gas safety valve, preheating slows dramatically. Igniter replacement is one of the most straightforward and affordable oven repairs.

How Oven Repair Works
Step 1: Book Your Appointment
Call (604) 265-3852 or book online. Let us know the oven type (wall oven, range oven, etc.), fuel type (gas or electric), brand, and the symptoms you’re seeing.
Step 2: Diagnostic & Quote
Your technician inspects the oven cavity, tests heating elements and sensors with a multimeter, checks gas ignition components on gas models, and verifies temperature accuracy. You get a clear diagnosis and firm quote.
Step 3: Repair Your Oven
Most oven repairs take 30–75 minutes. Common same-day repairs include igniters, bake elements, temperature sensors, door hinges, and thermal fuses. We use genuine OEM parts only.
Step 4: Warranty & Follow-Up
We run the oven to full temperature, verify it reaches the set temp within manufacturer specifications, and on gas ovens confirm all gas connections are leak-free. 6-month repair warranty on all work.

Recent Oven Repair in Vancouver - A Case Study
The problem: A homeowner in West Vancouver reached out about a Bosch oven that didn’t seem to reach temperature properly. She had it set to 375 F, but according to her thermometer it would only reach around 300 F. This led to inconsistent cooking times, and meals that would never be done right.
What we found: The first thing our technician Han-Su did was to hook up thermal probes and monitor the actual oven temperature while they set it to preheat. They also took off the backing plate and ensured that the elements were receiving the right voltage from the mainboard and double line break relay. Everything seemed to be in-order. What the found was that the oven heated up to roughly 30 F under the set temperature. And it seemed that the power delivery to the elements cycled at around 340 F, as though it reached the set 375 F. The control board was throttling the elements due to a bad calibration between the thermal sensor and the board.
The fix: We calibrated the oven board to adjust the cycling temp by about 25 F up. After monitoring and ensuring it reached around 375 F and cut out + 5F from set temp, we had resolved the issue. Total time on site: 45 minutes. Total cost: $250, no parts were needed.
The takeaway: An oven oven sensor is often the first suspect when your oven heats, but not quite right. However, in many modern ovens the boards have a calibration mechanism to allow for a more linear set-to-actual temperature range. As you use your oven over the years, the sensor may gradually degrade, which can create discrepancies and lead to poor cooking outcomes. Our specialists are able to track down these kind of nuanced issues and more, where most other companies would start quoting you a new sensor and board instead of doing a thorough diagnostic.
Should You Repair or Replace Your Oven?
Average lifespan: Gas ovens 15–20 years. Electric ovens 13–16 years. Wall ovens 14–18 years.
Repair if: Under 12 years old with a component failure like an igniter, element, sensor, or door hinge. Ovens are built to last and most repairs are well under half the replacement cost. Wall ovens especially favour repair — replacement involves cabinet modification and professional reinstallation.
Consider replacing if: Over 15 years old with a control board failure on a discontinued model (boards become scarce and expensive), or a gas oven with multiple safety component failures. Also consider replacing if the oven cavity interior is severely rusted or damaged.
Cost context: A new wall oven costs $1,500–$4,000+ installed. A freestanding range costs $1,000–$2,500. Since most oven repairs run $250–$400, repair is almost always the smarter financial move.

Oven Repair FAQ
My oven takes forever to preheat - what's wrong?
In gas ovens, a slow preheat is almost always a weakening igniter — it still glows but can’t draw enough current to open the gas valve fully. In electric ovens, a failing bake element or a malfunctioning temperature sensor can cause the same symptom. Either way, it’s usually a straightforward and affordable repair.
Can you repair a wall oven without removing it from the cabinet?
Many wall oven repairs (sensors, elements, control boards) can be done with the oven in place by accessing components from the front or through an access panel. Some repairs require partial removal — our technicians handle this carefully and reinstall at no extra charge.
Is it safe to use my oven if the self-clean door lock is broken?
Yes — the door lock is only used during the self-cleaning cycle (which reaches extremely high temperatures). Your oven will still cook normally with a broken door lock; you just won’t be able to run the self-clean function until it’s repaired.
Why does my oven burn food on one side?
Uneven baking is usually caused by a failed convection fan motor (the fan that circulates hot air), a partially burned-out element, or a damaged door seal letting heat escape from one side. A quick diagnostic can pinpoint which component is responsible.
Do you repair commercial ovens?
No, we generally don’t. We do not service commercial ovens for restaurants, bakeries, and commercial kitchens across Metro Vancouver. Commercial. For commercial units, you’re best off calling Key Foods – though they may require a premium diagnostic fee depending on the brand and complexity of the equipment.
