Other Appliances We Fix

Common Microwave Problems

While a basic countertop microwave might be cheap enough to replace, built-in and over-the-range models are a completely different situation — they’re integrated into your cabinetry, often cost $400–$1,500+, and require professional installation to swap out. For these units, repair almost always makes more financial sense than replacement.

We service all microwave types: over-the-range (OTR), built-in, drawer-style, and countertop units. Important safety note: microwaves contain a high-voltage capacitor that can hold a lethal charge even when unplugged. This is never a DIY repair.

Microwave Not Heating Food

If your microwave runs, the turntable spins, and the light is on — but food stays cold — the magnetron has most likely failed. The magnetron is the component that generates the microwaves that heat your food. Other possible causes include a faulty high-voltage diode, a burned-out capacitor, or a failed transformer. Magnetron replacement is the most common microwave repair we perform.

Microwave Sparking Inside the Cavity

Sparking inside the microwave is often caused by a damaged waveguide cover — the small cardboard or mica panel inside the cavity wall that shields the magnetron opening. Food splatter burns through it over time, causing visible arcing. Other causes include metal or foil accidentally left inside, a faulty stirrer motor, or burned spots on the interior cavity walls. Replacing the waveguide cover is a quick, inexpensive fix — but ignoring it can damage the magnetron, turning a $30 repair into a $200 one.

Microwave Has No Power at All

If the microwave is completely dead — no display, no light, no response to buttons — check your circuit breaker first. If the breaker is fine, the most common causes are a blown main fuse (often triggered by a power surge), a failed door switch, or a faulty control board. Door switch failures are especially common because microwave door switches activate thousands of times over the unit’s lifespan.

Microwave Starts Then Immediately Stops

A microwave that powers on for 2–3 seconds and then shuts off is almost always a door switch problem. Microwaves have multiple door interlock switches — if any one fails to confirm the door is sealed, the unit cuts power immediately as a safety measure. The failing switch may make contact when first pressed but lose contact as the microwave vibrates during operation. Replacing all door switches at once is standard practice since they wear at similar rates.

Microwave Turntable Won't Spin

A turntable that doesn’t rotate is usually caused by a failed turntable motor, a cracked or worn coupler (the three-pronged piece that connects the motor to the turntable plate), or a broken drive bushing. On some models, a faulty control board can also prevent the turntable from engaging. While food will still heat without a spinning turntable, it will heat unevenly.

Microwave Door Won't Latch Properly

A microwave with a door that won’t close or latch securely won’t start — this is a built-in safety feature. Common causes include worn door hooks, a cracked or broken latch assembly, or a misaligned door caused by a bent hinge. Because the door seal prevents microwave radiation from escaping the cavity, this is a safety-critical repair that should be addressed promptly.

How Microwave Repair Works

Step 1: Book Your Appointment

Call (604) 265-3852 or book online. Tell us the microwave type (over-the-range, built-in, countertop), brand, and symptoms. We’ll schedule a same-day or next-day appointment.

Step 2: Diagnostic & Quote

Your technician safely discharges the high-voltage capacitor, then tests the magnetron, diode, capacitor, door switches, and control board to identify the exact failure. You receive a clear diagnosis and firm quote.

Step 3: Repair Your Microwave

Most microwave repairs take 20–45 minutes. Common same-day repairs include door switches, magnetrons, fuses, waveguide covers, and turntable motors. We use genuine OEM parts only.

Step 4: Warranty & Follow-Up

We run multiple test cycles to confirm the microwave heats properly, the turntable spins, and all door switches and safety interlocks function correctly. 90-day parts and labour warranty on all work.

How Much Does Microwave Repair Cost in Vancouver?

We quote the exact repair cost after the diagnostic — upfront, with no surprises. You decide whether to proceed before we pick up a tool.

Common microwave parts and their approximate costs: magnetrons ($80–$200), high-voltage diodes ($15–$30), door switches ($10–$25 each — most microwaves have 3), capacitors ($30–$60), waveguide covers ($10–$30), turntable motors ($25–$50), main fuses ($10–$20), and control boards ($100–$250). Labour is covered by the flat-rate fee — these are part costs only.

Countertop microwave note: If your countertop microwave cost under $200 new, replacement is often more economical than repair. We’ll tell you this upfront – we won’t charge you $250 plus parts to fix a $150 appliance. For built-in, over-the-range, and premium countertop units, repair is almost always the better financial choice.

Recent Microwave Repair in Vancouver — A Case Study

The problem: We got a call from a homeowner in the Marpole area of Vancouver with a Frigidaire over-the-range (OTR) microwave who was complaining that their unit turned on for 2-3 seconds then completely powered off. The display and lights worked when they opened and closed the door, but it just refused to heat.

What we found: One of the three door interlock switches was intermittently failing. It made contact when first pressed but lost contact as the microwave vibrated during startup. Because the safety system detected a “door open” condition, it immediately cut power.

One of our expert technicians Alex arrived and verified the issue. The homeowner also advised us then that they had a different company out there before and were quoted a magnetron, a control board, and a transformer – all of which would cost them more than buying a new microwave, but they weren’t able to find a replacement that would perfectly fit their cabinet. When Alex tested the interlock switches he noticed that one of the three switches was failing intermittently – it would make good contact  at first, but as the microwave started to run and vibrate it would open the circuit and trigger a safety stop. This is a safety feature because while your microwave plugs into a 120VAC socket – every microwave has a high voltage circuit that runs on 2-5 Kilovolts. This is extremely dangerous, and not something that any homeowner or an unlicensed or untrained technician should ever try to handle themselves. As such, many safety features exist in microwaves to prevent runaway current and shocks from the high side of the circuitry.

The fix: During the diagnostic, Alex noticed that the microwave wasn’t mounted securely and replaced the mounting screws which helped the switch maintain constant contact during operation. Additionally, because when the switch broke contact, the plastic switch end gets a little worn every time – we advised the homeowner to replace the switch (part 5304493153) itself. Total cost $250 + $32 for the part. The whole service visit took around 30 minutes.

The takeaway: A microwave that starts and abruptly stops (especially intermittently) is often just a simple problem remedied by a $30 or so interlock switch replacement – not a $500-600 job with multiple expensive parts plus labour. This issue is very often misdiagnosed and ballooned up by many other companies who may not have the nice expertise in dealing with high voltage appliances and some modern models of microwaves. As we do a lot of warranty and have close relationships with most microwave manufacturers – we have the technical documentation, know-how and experience to diagnose your microwave issue properly and perform the correct repairs.

Should You Repair or Replace Your Microwave?

Average microwave lifespan: 7–12 years.

Repair if: It’s a built-in or over-the-range unit (replacement involves cabinet modification and professional reinstallation costing $200–$500+ in labour alone), the repair cost is under $300, or it’s a premium brand under 8 years old.

Consider replacing if: It’s a basic countertop unit that cost under $200 new, the magnetron has failed on a unit over 8 years old (repair cost approaches replacement cost), or the interior cavity has physical damage — rust, burn marks, or cracked walls that can’t be patched.

Cost context: A new over-the-range microwave costs $300–$800 plus $200–$400 for professional installation. A built-in microwave costs $500–$1,500+ installed. Most microwave repairs run $250–$350, making repair the clear winner for anything that isn’t a cheap countertop unit.

Microwave Repair FAQ

Is it worth repairing a microwave?

For built-in and over-the-range microwaves – almost always yes. These units cost $400–$1,500+ and require professional installation, so a $250–$350 repair saves significantly versus replacement. For basic countertop microwaves under $200, replacement usually makes more sense, and we’ll tell you that upfront.

Why is my microwave sparking inside?

The most common cause is a damaged waveguide cover — a small mica or cardboard panel inside the cavity that protects the magnetron opening. Food splatter burns through it over time, causing visible arcing. It’s an inexpensive part ($10–$30) and a quick fix, but should be addressed promptly to prevent magnetron damage.

Can I safely repair a microwave myself?

We strongly advise against it. Microwaves contain a high-voltage capacitor that can retain a lethal electrical charge (up to 4,000 volts) even when the unit is unplugged. All microwave repairs should be performed by a trained technician who knows how to safely discharge the capacitor before working on internal components.

Do you repair the exhaust fan on over-the-range microwaves?

Yes. Over-the-range microwaves double as range hoods with built-in exhaust fans. We repair fan motor failures, speed control issues, light socket replacements, and charcoal filter changes. If the fan runs but doesn’t vent effectively, we also check the ductwork and damper.

My microwave display works but it won't heat - what's wrong?

When the display and controls work but the microwave produces no heat, the magnetron has most likely failed. The magnetron is the component that converts electrical energy into microwaves. Other possibilities include a failed diode or capacitor. Our technician will test all three components to confirm the diagnosis before recommending a repair.
