Common Range Hood Problems
Your range hood quietly does one of the most important jobs in your kitchen: removing smoke, steam, grease, and cooking odours. When it stops working, grease builds up on cabinets and counters, cooking smells linger for hours, and your indoor air quality drops — especially concerning if you cook with gas, where proper ventilation removes combustion byproducts.
We service all range hood types: under-cabinet, wall-mounted, chimney-style, island hoods, downdraft ventilation, and custom hood inserts/liners. We also provide new range hood installation.
Range Hood Fan Not Working
If your range hood doesn’t turn on at all — no fan, no lights, no response — the problem is typically a blown thermal fuse, a failed fan motor, a faulty control switch or electronic touch panel, or a wiring issue. On hoods with electronic touch controls, a failed control board can also prevent all operation. We test power delivery, switches, and motor components to isolate the failure.
Hood Fan Runs But Doesn't Vent Properly
A fan that runs but doesn’t pull air effectively is the most common range hood complaint. The usual causes: grease-clogged baffle or mesh filters (the most frequent culprit), a blocked or partially collapsed ductwork run, a stuck or broken damper flap at the exterior vent cap, or a fan motor losing RPM due to worn bearings. We inspect the complete ventilation path — from the hood opening to the exterior wall or roof vent cap — to find the restriction.
Range Hood Making Loud Noises
Rattling, grinding, humming, or vibrating sounds from your range hood typically point to a failing fan motor bearing, a bent or loose fan blade, vibration from a loose hood mounting, or debris caught in the fan housing. A grinding sound usually means the motor bearings are failing and the motor will need replacement soon. A rattling that only happens at certain speeds often indicates a loose fan blade or housing screw.
Range Hood Lights Not Working
If the fan works but the lights don’t, it could be a simple burned-out bulb, a faulty light socket, a failed switch, or a control board issue. On hoods with LED lighting, individual LED modules or the LED driver board may need replacement. We check the easy fixes first before recommending any parts.
Grease Dripping from Range Hood
Grease dripping from your hood onto the cooktop or into your food means the filters are well overdue for cleaning, the grease collection tray or channel is full, or the internal baffle system is saturated. Heavy cooking (especially frying and wok cooking) accelerates grease buildup significantly. We can deep-clean the interior, replace filters, and clear the grease management system during a service call.
Range Hood Fan Speed Stuck or Unresponsive
If your range hood only works on one speed or the speed controls don’t respond, the fan speed switch, electronic control board, or capacitor may have failed. On hoods with physical rotary or push-button controls, switch replacement is straightforward. On hoods with touch-panel controls, the control board typically needs to be replaced.

How Range Hood Repair Works
Step 1: Book Your Appointment
Call (604) 265-3852 or book online. Tell us the hood type (under-cabinet, wall-mounted, island, etc.), brand, and what’s happening — no power, noise, weak suction, or something else.
Step 2: Diagnostic & Quote
Your technician inspects the hood, tests the fan motor, checks the full ventilation path from the filters to the exterior vent, and identifies the root cause. You get a clear diagnosis and upfront quote.
Step 3: Repair Your Range Hood
Most range hood repairs take 30–50 minutes. Common same-day repairs include fan motors, switches, control boards, and filter replacements. We also clean interior grease buildup during the service visit.
Step 4: Warranty & Follow-Up
We test the fan on all speed settings, verify the ductwork is pulling air properly by checking airflow at the exterior vent cap, and confirm lights and controls are functioning. 6-month repair warranty on all work.

Recent Range Hood Repair in Vancouver - A Case Study
The problem: A realtor in Point Grey called us in to inspect a 4-year old Falmec range hood that was out of warranty coverage. The range hood fan was making a loud grinding noise on just about every speed they set it to and the renters were cooking without using ventilation for weeks as they stopped using it entirely due to the unbearable noise.
What we found: We went through the usual checklist of install components as most noise issues usually involve an incorrect installation. However, the unit was installed almost perfectly. Our technician Nick inspected the motor and found that the bearings were caked in grease and the baffle screens weren’t cleaned in what seemed like the whole 4 years the unit was operational. The grease buildup hardened making it hard for the motor to spin, which eventually damaged the fan motor assembly and put it into an inoperational state.
The fix: We ordered a new fan motor assembly for the customer and deep cleaned the baffle screen filters. Once the new motor was installed – the unit functioned perfectly. We also corrected some small nuances in the install ensuring that the unit didn’t vibrate at all on any of the speed settings.
The takeaway: The vast majority of hood fan motor failures we see are due to negligence. The single maintenance item that homeowners can do is to clean the baffle screen filters regularly. Many of them are made from corrosion resistant steel and can be cleaned with warm water and dish soap, or even in your dishwasher (if they can fit). This cleaning should be done on a monthly or semi-monthly basis depending on how often you cook, and what kind of food you’re cooking.
Should You Repair or Replace Your Range Hood?
Average range hood lifespan: 10–15 years.
Repair if: Under 8 years old with a motor or switch failure. Range hood motors are relatively straightforward to replace and the total repair cost is typically $250–$400 — well under the cost of a new hood plus installation.
Consider replacing if: Over 12 years old with a motor failure (newer models are significantly quieter and more energy efficient), the hood is undersized for your current cooktop (upgrading CFM makes more sense than repairing), or the ductwork needs to be completely reconfigured.
Cost context: A new mid-range range hood costs $200–$800. Premium hoods (Zephyr, Faber, Miele) cost $800–$3,000+. Add $200–$500 for professional installation. Since motor replacement typically runs $250–$400 total, the math usually favours repair unless the hood is very old or undersized.

Range Hood Repair FAQ
How often should I clean my range hood filters?
For metal baffle filters, clean monthly by soaking in hot water with degreaser or running through the dishwasher. For aluminum mesh filters, replace every 6-12 months as they can’t be effectively cleaned once saturated. For charcoal filters (recirculating hoods), replace every 3-6 months – they absorb odours and can’t be washed.
My range hood vents into the kitchen — can you convert it to vent outside?
In many cases, yes – but it depends on your kitchen layout and whether ductwork can be routed to an exterior wall or roof cap. Exterior venting is always more effective than recirculating for removing grease, moisture, and cooking odours. We can assess your setup and provide a quote for the conversion.
Why does my range hood have weak suction?
The most common cause is clogged grease filters – this accounts for the majority of weak suction complaints. Other causes include a partially blocked duct run (grease buildup inside the ductwork over years), a stuck exterior damper flap, or a fan motor that’s losing power due to worn bearings. We check the entire airflow path from hood to exterior vent.
Do you install new range hoods?
Yes. We install under-cabinet, wall-mounted, island, chimney-style, and downdraft range hoods, as well as custom hood inserts into cabinetry. Installation pricing varies by hood type and ductwork requirements – call us for a quote.
Is a noisy range hood dangerous?
A noisy hood isn’t typically dangerous, but it indicates a mechanical problem (usually failing motor bearings) that will eventually lead to complete motor failure. Addressing it early is cheaper than waiting for the motor to seize completely. The one exception: if you hear a rattling combined with a burning smell, turn off the hood and call us – the motor may be overheating.
