Common Maytag Dishwasher Problems: Error Codes, Draining, and Repairs

Table of Contents

Maytag dishwashers are built to be reliable, but like any appliance they develop specific failure patterns over time. Knowing which problems are common on Maytag — and which ones you can fix yourself — saves a service call and gets your machine back running faster.

Maytag dishwasher not cleaning dishes properly

Dishes coming out with food residue or grease is the most frequent complaint on Maytag dishwashers. Before assuming a mechanical fault, eliminate the common culprits:

  • Clogged filter: Maytag dishwashers have a manual-clean filter at the bottom of the tub. It’s a twist-off cylinder. Remove it, rinse under warm water, and use a soft brush to clear debris. If you’ve never cleaned it, this alone might be your fix.
  • Blocked spray arms: Remove the upper and lower spray arms (most twist off by hand or with one screw). Rinse under running water and poke any clogged nozzle holes with a toothpick.
  • Detergent dispenser not opening: If the dispenser lid springs open but leaves detergent behind, or stays closed during the wash, dishes won’t clean properly. Check whether the dispenser door swings freely when you press the release. If it’s sluggish or seized, the dispenser latch spring may need replacement.

If all three check out and dishes are still dirty, the wash pump motor may be weakening. Maytag diaphragm-style pumps eventually wear out — you’ll hear the motor running but water pressure at the spray arms drops. A technician can test pump output pressure.

Maytag dishwasher not draining

Standing water in the bottom of the tub after a cycle means the drain cycle didn’t complete. On Maytag (and its Whirlpool-platform siblings), the common causes are:

  • Clogged drain filter or drain area: Clean the filter as above and check the sump area at the bottom for debris.
  • Drain hose kinked or clogged: The drain hose runs from the dishwasher to either a garbage disposal inlet or directly to the sink drain. Pull the machine slightly and check that the hose isn’t kinked. If connected to a garbage disposal, confirm the knockout plug was removed.
  • Failed drain pump: If the motor runs on the drain cycle but water doesn’t clear, the pump impeller may be jammed (by glass or debris) or the pump motor has failed. Both are repairable.

Maytag dishwasher not drying dishes

If dishes come out wet (especially plastics), check these first:

  • Heated dry option: Confirm it’s turned on. On many Maytag models, the heated dry setting is a separate button that may default to off.
  • Rinse aid: Rinse aid is essential for good drying. Check the rinse aid dispenser and refill if empty. Increase the rinse aid setting if dishes are consistently wet.
  • Heating element: The element at the bottom of the tub heats air during the dry cycle. If it’s failed, dishes dry poorly. Test the element with a multimeter — it should show continuity. No continuity means the element needs replacement.

Maytag dishwasher error codes

Maytag dishwashers share their error code system with Whirlpool, since they share the same platform. Common codes:

  • F6E4 or F8E4: Water supply issue — the dishwasher isn’t detecting adequate water fill. Check water supply valve, inlet valve, and water pressure.
  • F3E1: Thermistor (temperature sensor) fault. If the dishwasher runs but doesn’t heat properly, this code may appear.
  • F7E1: Heating element fault — element not heating or sensor not detecting heat.
  • F2E2: Control board communication fault. If this appears after other errors are resolved, the board may need replacement.

To clear error codes on most Maytag models: press Cancel/Drain, wait 30 seconds, and restart. If the code immediately returns, the underlying fault hasn’t been addressed.

Maytag dishwasher door latch problems

Maytag dishwashers won’t start if the door latch isn’t fully engaged. If the machine won’t start and there’s no error code, try pressing firmly on the door until you hear a definitive click before starting. If the door feels loose or the latch mechanism feels sloppy, the latch assembly needs replacement. It’s a $20 to $40 part and a straightforward swap — the latch is usually accessible by removing the inner door panel.

Maytag dishwasher making noise

  • Grinding during wash: Foreign object in the pump area — check filter and sump for glass or debris.
  • Thumping or vibrating: Spray arm hitting a poorly loaded item. Check rack loading.
  • Loud humming: Pump motor bearing wearing out. More common on machines over 8 years old.
  • Squealing: Worn pump bearings or a damaged impeller. Repair or replacement needed.

Maytag dishwasher not starting

If the machine is completely unresponsive: check the circuit breaker (dishwashers sometimes share a circuit), confirm the door latch is engaged, and try holding the Cancel button for 3 to 5 seconds to reset the control board. If the machine shows no response at all and power is confirmed, the thermal fuse may have blown.

When to call a technician

Clean the filter and spray arms yourself. Check the rinse aid and detergent dispenser yourself. For drain pump failure, inlet valve testing, element replacement, or control board diagnosis, a technician will get there faster and save you the risk of misdiagnosis.
