If a Samsung fridge is warm while the freezer is still cold, the problem is almost never the compressor. It is the evaporator fan or a frosted-over coil that has stopped cold air reaching the fresh-food side.

That one symptom narrows the diagnosis more than anything else, so it is worth being precise about what your fridge is actually doing before you start.
Read the symptom first
Freezer cold, fridge warm. Both compartments are cooled by one evaporator coil in the freezer, with a fan pushing that cold air through a duct into the fridge. If the fan fails or the coil ices over, the freezer stays cold and the fridge warms up. This is the most common Samsung cooling complaint we see.
Both compartments warm, compressor running. Points to a sealed system fault, a failed compressor or a refrigerant leak. This is not a DIY repair.
Both warm, nothing running at all. Check power and the breaker before anything else.
The checks worth doing yourself
Listen for the evaporator fan. Open the freezer and hold the door switch in. You should hear a fan. Silence with the compressor running is a strong indicator.
Look for frost on the back wall of the freezer. A thin even layer is normal. A thick sheet of ice building over the vents means the defrost system has stopped working and the coil behind that panel is packed solid.
Check the vents inside the fridge. Samsung fridges have a duct at the back of the fresh-food compartment. Packed tightly with food, it blocks, and the fridge warms while the freezer is fine. Pull items away from the back wall and leave a gap.
Check the door seal. Close the door on a banknote. If it slides out with no resistance, the seal is not sealing, and warm humid air entering continuously will frost the coil faster than defrost can clear it.
Twin Cooling models
Some Samsung fridges use Twin Cooling Plus, with separate evaporators for each compartment. On those, a warm fridge with a cold freezer usually means the fridge evaporator or its fan specifically, rather than a shared duct. Check the model number before assuming the single-coil layout applies.
Forcing a defrost
If the coil is iced, unplug the fridge, empty the freezer and leave the doors open for several hours until everything has thawed and drained. Plug it back in. If it cools normally for a few days and then fails the same way, the defrost system is confirmed as the fault - the heater, the defrost sensor or the control board.
Do not chip at ice on the coil with anything metal. The aluminium tubing punctures easily, and a punctured evaporator turns a routine repair into sealed system work at $800 to $1,500.
Frequently Asked Questions
My Samsung fridge shows an error code. What does it mean?
Codes in the 5 range generally relate to fridge or freezer sensors and defrost, and a 22-series code typically points at the fridge fan. The code narrows it, but it identifies the circuit reporting a fault, not always the part that failed. Note it down before you call - it saves diagnostic time.
How long should I wait after adjusting the temperature?
Give it 24 hours. A fridge that is genuinely working takes most of a day to stabilise after a setting change or a door left open, and plenty of "not cooling" calls resolve themselves in that window.
Is it worth repairing a Samsung fridge that has stopped cooling?
Usually, yes. A fan motor or a defrost heater is an ordinary repair against a replacement fridge at $1,200 to $2,500. Sealed system work is the point where the conversation changes, and we will tell you plainly when that is where you are.
When to call
If the fan is silent, the coil re-ices after a manual defrost, or both compartments are warm with the compressor running, book a fridge repair. We are factory-trained on Samsung, the $100 diagnostic comes off your repair labour, and we hold the ODP licence needed for sealed system work if that is what it turns out to be.
