This is the single most common Sub-Zero call and the one most likely to be preventable. The condenser sits behind the upper grille, and in a built-in installation there is no airflow around the cabinet to help it. Dust, and in most homes pet hair, mat across the coil until it can no longer shed heat. The compressor then runs longer and longer to hold temperature.

Left long enough this kills compressors, which on a dual refrigeration unit is a serious repair. Sub-Zero specifies condenser cleaning every six to twelve months and almost nobody does it. We clean it as part of any diagnostic, and on a lot of visits that is the entire fault.

On most brands this is a fan or a blocked duct. On a dual refrigeration Sub-Zero it means the fridge side's own system has a problem while the freezer's system is fine. That could be its evaporator fan, its defrost circuit, its sensor, or a sealed system fault on that side only.

Knowing the unit is dual refrigeration changes the whole diagnostic order, and it is the most common thing a general technician gets wrong on this brand. We test each system independently rather than assuming a shared airflow path that does not exist.

Sub-Zero doors seal with a magnetic gasket against a cabinet that is often carrying a heavy custom panel. Over years that weight works on the hinges, the door sits fractionally proud at one corner, and the gasket stops making contact along an edge. Condensation around the opening and a unit that runs more than it used to are the early signs, well before anyone notices a gap.

Hinge and door alignment is adjustable and is frequently the whole repair. Where the gasket has taken a permanent set we replace it, and we check the panel mounting at the same time so it does not recur.

Sub-Zero ice makers fail in a predictable order: the water filter, the fill valve, the fill tube freezing, then the module itself. Hollow or small cubes almost always mean restricted fill rather than a failed module, and that is usually a filter that is years past due or a valve that has silted.

We check fill volume before touching the module, because the module is the expensive part and it is seldom the one that failed. On units with a filter we will also tell you the replacement interval, which is the difference between this being an annual call and a one-off.

Many Sub-Zero models carry an air purification cartridge with a service life of around a year, and it is a replaceable consumable rather than a sealed component. An odour that survives a thorough clean, in a unit that is otherwise holding temperature correctly, is usually a cartridge that expired several years ago.

It is an inexpensive part and an easy one, and we would rather tell you it is that than sell you a diagnosis. We also check the drain pan and the defrost drain while we are in there, since a blocked drain produces the same complaint.

In a frost-free unit, frost building on the rear wall means defrost has stopped. The heater, the defrost sensor, or the control board on that system. Ice accumulates over the evaporator until air can no longer pass, and the compartment then warms despite the compressor running constantly.
